Random Astana Adventure - September 2016

In September I went to the United States to spend a week in Madison, Wisconsin.  Before I left, we had a small adventure downtown.  Next year in Astana it will be the Expo.  During the summer a number of statues appeared on the mall that leads from the President's palace to the Khan Shatyr, the large mall that is a giant tent.  All of the statues look the same, but they are painted different, and each one represents a country that is participating in the Expo[1].

Next to the Russian statue, looking West toward Khan Shatyr through the Kazmunaigaz building.

A good view of the entire forest of statues.

Looking the other way - to the East - toward the Bayterek and the White House (Ak Orda).

In addition to the men holding the earth statues, there was an outdoor art expo, and many of the pieces were interactive.  The kids had a great time looking at them.  We had a nice time walking in the late afternoon, and we ended the day with a dinner at a restaurant at the Keruen mall.

A colorful tree full of Yurts.

Bike tables were a hit!

A tower made out of plastic vegetable oil bottles.

A real Rube-Goldberg machine windmill art project.

There is usually something interesting going on that we can be a part of.  Small adventures are adventures, too.

[1] At the time we were there, about 80 countries were going to participate.  Now there are more - and the United States has joined the list.  We are looking forward to seeing what the Expo will be like, since it is being held right across the street from us.
